Memento

April 9, 2016 21:59 BST

I have two important paper „mementos” that help keep my focus on any task. There is the philosophy summary. And there is also the current action memento.

The current action memento is very simple. It contains one word written in big letters. There could be 1-2 secondary things, written out in a smaller font, but it is important to keep it simple. The philosophy memento is a half-page summary of practically important ideas.

This has the objective of creating good state of mind, and it’s not about metaphysics. I’m not a fan of metaphysics. The philosophy memento looks something like this:

Components of life
Write – Draw – Program
Joy – Inspiration – Health
Create – Believe – Defend

Good form
Meditate, lest you regret it later;
Doing the necessary, and no fear of the uncontrollable;
Comprehend and handle fear, and ill feelings;
Things are imperfect; One can do better, but never perfect.

Essential methods
Passionate Determination (PD):
PD1. Obliteration of fear, including fear of failure and all other fears;
PD2. Obliteration of ill feelings;
PD3. Total dedication, with the totality of heart and mind, to the task at hand;
PD4. Passionate confidence in the power of self;
PD5. Passionate confidence in the accomplishment of the task at hand.

Right Effort (RE):
RE1. It is better to do a thing with joy than to suffer;
RE2. Sometimes it is necessary to suffer through pain.

Focus, on the precise object;
Even waste will be turned into useful time, subjected to love.

Avoiding traps
Sulking, doubt is not PD;
Less idle contemplation, less parasitic worries.

The attentive reader will have guessed this is a mixture of Buddhism, Stoicism and positive thinking.
